...sausage is one of the oldest foodstuffs still common nowadays and is found in different varieties all over the world. It can be seen on drawings and paintings from Egypt, Syria and China dating from 5000 B.C. The word itself in German – "Wurst" – seems to originate from the Indo-Germanic language, specifically the word "wers". The origin of the word means confused, mixed up. So the sausage is a mixed-up mass – and anyone who’s ever seen sausages being made can confess to that!
The words “lebarwurst” and “pratwurst” first emerged in Germany in the 12th century. The different types of sausages got their spices from local herbs, mostly cultivated in monastery gardens.
