The Hamburg butcher trade

In Hamburg, plying the butcher trade was fundamentally linked to the ownership of what was known as a butcher block. According to long-held custom, this could only be passed from father to son. Many blocks became orphaned in Hamburg after 1815 due to losses in the Napoleonic Wars, so the Hamburg Senate decided to reallocate the empty blocks. As a result of this, Württemberg master butcher Georg Christian Beisser was assigned “Block 28” in Spitalerstrasse in 1836.

Expansion of the supply business to overseas shipping companies

In addition to a shop in Spitalerstrasse, the owner's son also kept cattle for breeding, held his own estates and had a meat factory in Lange Reihe street. Georg Michael Heinrich Beisser paid particular attention to expanding the business supplying overseas shipping companies. The most prominent customer at that time was the imperial yacht “Hohenzollern”.

Founding of Beisser Gebrüder GmbH

The foundations for the present-day Beisser Gebrüder GmbH were laid by the great-grandsons of the founder G.C. Beisser in 1920. Alfred and Heinrich Beisser founded a new company called Beisser Gebrüder and acquired a modern company site at Ellerholzdamm in the Free Port of Hamburg. Supplying ships was the focus of their business. They increased their fleet of vehicles and acquired two launches so that deliveries could then be made to ships on the waterways. Well-known shipping companies and ship suppliers in Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel and Lübeck were clients of Alfred and Heinrich Beisser. The tradition of the “good Beisser sausage” was founded.
